There is a rumour going around at the Canadian Satellite Forums about NewNet rebranding possibly occuring this fall. The poster, who claims to have connections to CHUM, said something like "how long can these stations stay 'new'?" They'd better not go the route of identical branding...in Ontario for example I'd like to see The New VR become just "VR", maybe The New RO become "RO-6", as it is on cable 6 in its coverage area. The New VR has been "New" since September 1995. 10 years... How can one be still "New" for 10 years?

Really A Channel is a very odd weird name. I don't think CHUM will change New VI to A Channel.

Access is one station that broadcasts to Edmonton and Calgary from their studios at the U of A in Edmonton. So it's like a semi-duopoly. ACCESS doesn't broadcast from the U of A... where did you get that from? And semi-duopoly? Its purpose to serve all of Alberta as its educational TV channel... like TVO in Ontario...

yea but Access also shows New Episodes of shows like Smallville, Monk, Conan O'Brian, etc. and Lots of Movies every month so while they are a Educational Channel they do show some regular series

Reason why Access Alberta has broadcast rights to these programs is because they have a 60% share in the station. Smallville, Late Night with Conan O'Brien are already shown on CHUM stations in other parts of Canada. Not sure about Monk. Smallville (CityTV, SPACE has reruns) Late Night/Conan (NewNet, reruns on Star) Another interesting note is that the Tonight Show with Jay Leno was broadcast on A-Channel long before CHUM took over Craig. So Craig had the Prarie broadcast rights to that program because of no CHUM coverage there and/or there was no room on Access Alberta program schedule (at least in Alberta). i'm going beyond.. With the recent CHUM takeover, hopefully these programs will be in the SOLE place as they are throughout the rest of Canada. [Minus NTV of course ]

When I lived there, they had studios at the U of A. And it is a semi-duopoly as it broadcasts to two cities but only has studios in one - it is treated as a local television station when it really isn't - hence semi-duopoly. Not all of Alberta gets Access.

Sorry to burst your bubble dude, but Access currently broadcasts at a facility in SE Edmonton - in the middle of an industrial park. Access can be seen OTA in Calgary and Edmonton, but cable elsewhere. It's already been announced the Access studios will be moving in with A-Channel Edmonton and 91.7 The Bounce. The master controls for Access, CLT, Book TV, and CourtTV will be moving to Calgary. When I lived there, they had studios at the U of A. And it is a semi-duopoly as it broadcasts to two cities but only has studios in one - it is treated as a local television station when it really isn't - hence semi-duopoly. Perhaps Access was at U of A a long time ago...how long ago was Tim in Edmonton?

The last time I watched Access was 1998, so it is probably that they were at the U of A until slightly after that and then moved to the industrial park.

It's already been announced the Access studios will be moving in with A-Channel Edmonton and 91.7 The Bounce. The master controls for Access, CLT, Book TV, and CourtTV will be moving to Calgary. Going extremely off-topic: We have WAY too many radio stations here. I mean, on the 88-108MHz band. For example, 91.7 had better music when they were in Testing stage. And some people with cheap radio tuners now complain of cross-interference. (Compared to 580-1710, where you can actually listen to distant stations at night, like CKWX in Vancouver. Comes in well with just a little loop of wire around a plastic container. )

The rumour is correct, and the A-Channel name will live on in Ontario and BC. CHUM Television announces plans to rebrand local Southern Ontario stations The New VR (Barrie), The New RO (Ottawa/Pembroke), The New PL (London), The New WI (Windsor), The New NX (Wingham) and B.C. station, The New VI (Victoria), as A-Channels for the Fall 2005 television season.
The stations' local mandate will remain unchanged. Each will continue serving their viewers with locally-focused programming and strong community involvement. However, in rebranding as A-Channels, they will share a common name and creative elements, in addition to programming specifically produced and acquired for the group. This will allow CHUM to take full advantage of the promotional opportunities available across its television and radio stations.
"Using a single brand name for the stations opens tremendous national cross-promotional opportunities across our media assets that are unavailable when operating under six separate station names," said David Kirkwood, EVP Sales and Marketing, CHUM Television. "With the reformatting of CHUM's newly acquired stations in Alberta and Manitoba to Citytvs this fall, we have a very strong and highly adaptable brand name available to us. Moreover, A-Channel is a name that's proven to work in multiple local markets."
With six A-Channel and five Citytv stations, CHUM will have two strong, distinctive yet complementary local station brands covering the majority of television households across Canada.

That press message was released on the CHUM corporate site about three months ago, if I recall correctly.
