Global National wins three RTNDA awards
(TORONTO - Monday, June 13, 2005) Global National with Kevin Newman dominated the network section of the awards competition presented by Canada’s Radio-Television News Directors Association. The awards were handed out Friday night in Toronto. Earning nominations in five of the eight categories, the program has won three, including the prestigious Bert Cannings award for Best Newscast.
“To be named Canada’s Best National Newscast by the leaders of Canada’s broadcast newsrooms is an important benchmark for our team,” said Global National Anchor and Executive Editor Kevin Newman. “We are competitors by definition, but to have the respect of our peers is tremendously gratifying. Especially for such a young, national organization.”
“This is a great night not only for Global National, but for the entire Global News network across the country,” said Executive Producer Kenton Boston. “It is nice to be recognized by the industry as our audience grows. We have a strong group of journalists who work very hard every day to tell a different side of the story sooner under the expert direction of Kevin Newman.”
Global National also received the Charlie Edwards Award, presented for Best Spot or Breaking News. It was based on Global National’s coverage of the day that the sponsorship scandal first broke. On that day, fast work made for complete reports that were produced in the narrow timeframe between the Auditor-General’s afternoon lock-up and the newscast’s early evening deadline.
Global National also received its first award in the In-depth/Investigative category for the hour-long special Know Your Enemy: al Qaeda’s Third Wave. Newman hosted the program from Washington and New York City with reports from Bosnia and the U.K.
Global National with Kevin Newman airs seven nights a week as follows:
Ontario/Quebec/Alberta - 6:30pm Manitoba/Saskatchewan - 6pm British Columbia - 5:30pm Maritimes - 11:15pm weekdays; weekends at 11pm

from canwestmediasales.ca Global National wins three RTNDA awards Oddly enough, Global National is my least favourite of the three national newscasts. I find it to spend too much time on individual stories, and some of it is a rehash of what was on the earlier news with no updates. We don't need local Toronto news on GN when it has already been on the CIII newscast earlier, viewers in other regions couldn't care less about some pothole on Kingston Road. I like CTV News (not to be confused with CIVT's local newscast of the same name), and also The National, although not as much as I used to. I have watched old clips of the National/Journal hour from the 80s and they brought a better, more relevant product to Canadians than today. My mom and I have both commented that The National has become a documentary programme of sorts in recent years, but they are still good at hard news.

Don't forget The New VI won a national award for it's mini series on Crystal Meth. That is pretty impressive for a small station from a small city such as victoria.

Wow you couldn't be more wrong. Global National is taped more often than it is live; CTV does a western newcast as well, which is taped after 8.

Now tell me, who honestly didn't see that comment coming? Interesting what you said: "can go Live if they want" Why yes, they CAN go live but they never usually DO go live. And yes, I Miss BCTV stated that there is a western edition of CTV News taped after the one at 7. I'm not sure what time but as previously stated, likely after 8. And if CTV really wanted to, they could go live as well.

Here's something to counter TV News' GN posting. Here's an release directly from CTV and can be found on CTV.ca Local news teams add eight Canadian National Awards to earlier wins from RTNDA International - CTV Inc. Takes Home 14 RTNDA Awards as CTV News is Named World's Best for Spot News Coverage Toronto, Ontario (June 14, 2005) - CTV News has been honoured by the Radio-Television News Directors Association (RTNDA) - both in Canada and worldwide. The international arm of the RTNDA announced yesterday that CTV News has been named the 2005 national Edward R. Murrow Award recipient for Best Spot News (Network Television), confirming that CTV News with Lloyd Robertson is the world's best for breaking news coverage. CTV triumphed over 25 other television entries from around the world to win the award for its coverage of a hostage taking at Toronto's Union Station. On the national level, CTV Toronto's CTV News at 6 took home the highly coveted award for "Best Television Newscast" from RTNDA Canada's National Awards in Toronto on Friday. The nod was one of eight National Awards given for journalistic excellence to CTV's News Division and follows another five RTNDA awards presented by the international arm to local CTV news teams earlier this year. In all, CTV Inc. has taken home 14 RTNDA awards this year. Below is a list of awards presented to CTV news teams by RTNDA Canada on Friday, June 10: CTV Toronto's CTV News at 6 took home the Bert Cannings Award for "Best Television Newscast" (Large Market) for their investigation into the red tape that kept salt trucks from clearing one of the city's busiest roadways during winter snowstorms. CTV Regina also won the Bert Cannings Award for "Best Television Newscast" (Medium Market). The CTV News Six O'clock Report was recognized for rising to the challenge and supplying comprehensive storm coverage during one of the worst Saskatchewan blizzards in recent memory. ATV News received two nods from the association again this year. The first was the Gord Sinclair Award for "Best Special Events Coverage" (Medium Market Television) for Presidential Visit. This winning entry went live from the moment Air Force One touched down in Halifax through President Bush's special thank you to Atlantic Canadians for their help after 9-11. The second win was the Charlie Edwards Award for "Best Spot News" for White Juan in which the news team hit the streets after 100 centimetres of snow fell in Nova Scotia over 24 hours in February, 2004. CFCF was recognized with the Dave Rogers Award for "Best Feature Reporting" in the National Television Newscast category (Large Market) for CFCF News On Assignment's In Search of a Cure. This winning entry focused on three families who sought alternative treatments for their sick children from a controversial clinic in the United States. The Network Television "Website Award" went to Canada AM's www.canadaam.ctv.ca, praised for easy access and an abundance of timely information. CTV Toronto's Jim Junkin was one of only seven individuals honoured this year with an "RTNDA Lifetime Achievement Award". This award is one of the highest honours bestowed by the RTNDA to individuals who have distinguished themselves through outstanding service and continual excellence during the course of their career in broadcast journalism. Junkin's career continues to flourish 44 years after it began. Today, he is Toronto's veteran reporter on the police beat with reporting skills and wide a network of contacts that have earned him police, fire and ambulance awards too numerous to mention. His professionalism over the years has earned him the trust and respect of police chiefs, senior investigators and regular officers on the beat. Vice President and Executive Producer of Canada AM, Lis Travers, was also honoured Friday with the "2005 RTNDA Distinguished Service Award". This yearly award recognizes an individual who is deemed to have rendered exemplary service to the benefit of both RTNDA and broadcast journalism. Travers was Chair of the RTNDA 2002 National Conference in Montreal, and is a member of this year's conference committee in addition to serving as Vice President - Television, a position she's held for several years. Friday's accolades come on the heels of several regional Edward R. Murrow Awards for local CTV news teams from the RTNDA (international) in March, 2005. CTV Toronto and CFCN each took home a prize, and ATV won a total of three awards. CTV, Canada's largest private broadcaster, offers a wide range of quality news, sports, information, and entertainment programming. It boasts the number-one national newscast, CTV News With Lloyd Robertson, and is the number-one choice for prime-time viewing. CTV owns 21 conventional television stations across Canada and has interests in 14 specialty channels, including the number-one Canadian specialty channel, TSN. CTV is owned by Bell Globemedia, Canada's premier multi-media company. More information about CTV may be found on the company website at www.ctv.ca.

They can go live at 5:30 on BCTV, simply because they are coming from within the province! Out in the Maritimes, GN is broadcast on MITV at 11:15 PM ADT, which is 7:15 PDT, which makes me doubt it is live for them. It could be done, but most likely it is pre-taped. As for CTV, just because you work for Global doesn't mean you can post false info about CTV. That does nothing to enhance BCTV's image. BCTV has a solid enough footing in the region that it doesn't even need to advertise for heaven's sake! (j/k)
