Very interesting. I thought that they'd just keep Robin Stickley in that spot (as Suzette Meyers did in 2001 with Weekend Morning, Noon and News Hour) or that someone in-house would get the nod (i.e.: Reg Hampton or someone else) not get a complete outsider, unknown to the Vancouver market. I'm sure this won't hurt the ratings at all! His start date will be May 1st. The press release is below: www.newswire.ca/en/releases/archive/April2006/03/c1793.html

Maybe they're trying to groom him as a successor to Tony Parsons? He's been very popular in New York. so who knows?

Chris Gailus is a great anchor. Liked him when he was in Calgary, definitely, he'll be a great fit.

Well, I dont think this has anything to do with Robyn Stickley or the weekend news at all. This has everything to do with Tony Parons leaving in two years, and for Global BC to handpick an anchor, introduce him to BC and the timeslot, to join Deb Hope in the anchor chair for the Weekday Newhour one day.
He has a good record in New York, and is a good steal for Global BC to introduce to their viewers, and slide him into the big time slot when Tony is gone. They have no other cheif male anchors (not trying to be sexist, but it they choose to go with one, or two co-anchors) this makes sense.

Popular N.Y. anchor returns to Global; [Final Edition] Kevin Griffin. The Vancouver Sun. Vancouver, B.C.: Mar 31, 2006. pg. D.3
A former Global TV anchor in Calgary who became a popular anchor in New York is expected to be reading the weekend news on BCTV News on Global by May.
Ian Haysom, news director of BCTV News on Global, confirmed that Chris Gailus will also become part of the Monday to Friday team working with anchor Tony Parsons.
"Chris Gailus will be joining us in May as anchor of the Weekend News Hour," Haysom said.
"He'll also be part of the back-up team Monday to Friday."
Asked if he's being groomed to take over from Parsons, who celebrates his 50th anniversary as an anchor this year, Haysom was non-committal but added that Parsons has no plans to retire.
Last September, Parsons celebrated his 30th year as the anchor of BCTV. For most of that time, he has remained the province's No. 1 TV news anchor.
Gailus is currently the anchor of WNYW-TV's Good Day New York morning program.
Gailus said in an interview from New York that he's looking forward to be working in his favourite city and to be working with a crew at BCTV that's so dedicated to broadcast journalism.
"I love the city -- it's that simple," he said. "Vancouver is my favourite city in the world."
Gailus said he'll be starting at BCTV News on Global on Monday, May 1.
A recent story in the New York Daily News about Gailus's departure and move north to Canada described him as a "handsome anchorman . . . who helps lure bleary-eyed female viewers to the show each morning."
Gailus graduated from the Broadcasting Journalism program at Mount Royal College in Calgary in 1989. He joined CFCN in 1992 and became one of Global TV's most popular anchors in Calgary. Gailus moved to ABC News in Dallas after marrying fellow anchor Jane Carrigan.
He joined WNYW in New York in April 2003. He has reported on major stories for the station, including the deployment of troops from Fort Hood, Tex., during the second war in Iraq. He also anchored breaking news coverage of the Columbia shuttle disaster.
According to the WNYW website, Gailus and his wife have a house full of pets. At 1.94 metres (six feet five inches), he's the tallest member of Fox 5 staff in New York and can still dunk a basketball. He continues to support Mount Royal College by lending his name and face to college initiatives.
Gailus, who has siblings in Squamish and Vancouver, said he's looking forward to reporting on the region and getting back to outdoor activities such as kayaking and mountain biking. He said he may even add sailing to the list.
"We can't wait to get back to some of the things that we stopped doing when we moved to Texas," said Gailus, a frequent visitor to the city. "I can't wait to get back to a West Coast way of life."

He'll be a good sub for Global National on the weekdays, too.

Robin Stickely announced it was her last day as the interim News Hour anchor and that Chris will be in as of next weekend anchoring his first broadcast . Maybe his wife maybe reporting and/or anchoring down the road maybe at another station -- his wife is Jane Carrigan formerly of CFCN).

Hmm, yeah, it would be funny to see him back at a Global station and her at a CTV station. But there don't appear to be any openings at CIVT, unless she were to be working as a reporter or off-camera.
