Word in the broadcasting community has CTV starting work on a new universal news open for local stations and will be dropping the colour callsign logo, moving to universal generic branding like Global and CBC. The new graphics scheme will debut next year at the earliest.
As for any hints as to what the new opens/closes and graphics will contain (colour scheme, fontfaces, shaping, styling etc.), On-Air Operations manager Brad McLean said, "It most likely will no longer be primarily blue, and we're most likely dropping that leaf motif. Global wants to move towards blue graphics in their next graphical update. Since we are 'Canadian Television', we'll probably go with something red. But don't bet on that, yet."
If this will change the look of CTV's national news and W-Five, we'll have to see.

Uh oh... this is going to confuse people. First Global was red... then it went to the blue and gold... then back to red which is what it is now... now back to blue?!?! And CTV will go from blue to red?? For the people in BC that still don't realize (and believe me, I'm sure there are plenty!!!) CTV9 and BCTV/Global are two DIFFERENT, separately owned stations... well, good luck to ya.

Actually, wasn't Global some kind of multi-coloured jobby? Because I can remember something like this for their L3's. And I agree, this may be very confusing again. Anyway, Mr. McLean did say that he wasn't 100% sure it would be red, but that it was a huge possibility.

UPDATE: sorry for the dp.
As far as I know, the other CTV stations aren't using this new open package, so the redo of graphics is still on for next year.
That is, unless CTV puts the music and graphics package across Canada despite all other stations not having choppers yet.

As far as I know, the other CTV stations aren't using this new open package... Yes they are. ATV (well, ASN anyway) is using them, as is CFCN (as I discovered by poking through the source code on its website). Couldn't tell what's in the CFCN open, but ATV has a microwave truck in its open accompanied by local imagery and the phrase "#1 Newscast in the Maritimes".

Interesting. Thanks for that piece of information, then.

If CTV's going to do that, we're going to have to start taking action. Identical local branding is what is wrong with Canadian television today. The CRTC must stop this from occurring, because as far as I'm concerned I watch CKCO, not CTV.

Point taken, and I agree. I think Global's viewer share would be a lot higher if they had slogans like "Connected to the community" etc. etc.

I really wish they would update the graphics on the Lloydcast, they are getting kind of boring now. I also really hate the set now, they need an update! it has been the same overall design (with new panelling and a new desk) for years. They need some plasma screens or another camera angle...why oh why do we have to suffer with only one? ?

I think CTV National News is just fine. There is something that can be said for keeping something consistent for many years. I always admired Global in Ontario, they used the exact same set, graphics and presentation from 1984-1994, with a minor update in 1990. People come to expect a certain "look" to a station, and changing it frequently gives a station a sort of identity crisis. CITY-TV Toronto has been in such a crisis for the past few years, it seems something has changed every time I tune into CityPulse.

I'm pretty bad with consistency, I like change, and I get bored with new things fast.

I agree - CTV News with Lloyd Robertson needs to be overhauled in it's set and it's opening as well. They've adopted the new graphics as have other CTV stations but it seems inconsistent with the old opening.

It could look sooooo much better too, they've got the space and the potential for a better set!

Well if CTV News (known herein as "CTV National News" in my posts, to avoid confusion with CIVT's "CTV News") is using the new L3 graphics, then they should probably adjust their opening. However once they do that they should stick with it. I want to see the same opening and L3s in 2009. (Not on the local news though, that's where the large overhaul is needed.)
Think of this as a can of Campbell's Soup. The can has changed very little over the last few decades, and has established itself. CTV needs to do the same.

But television is different, it grows and changes with technology, a can of soup doesn't change. take a program like NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, which has possibly the worst graphics, and set of all respected US news programs, the show is dull and boring which attracts less viewers... while continuity is important, too much of it is also a bad thing; it is important to change and grow and to strengthen your brand.
