CFTO News is no more...at least on-air and on the web. Like CIVT in Vancouver and the four stations in Saskatchewan, the local newscast is now CTV News. How stupid. How dare they try and tinker with Toronto's number one newscast. Too confusing for viewers, who have grown accustomed to CFTO over the past 45 years.
Of course, I know in this group I am alone in my sentiment.

Well I think it's better to have all the CTV stations just be "CTV". Why? Becasue when they have both CFTO and CTV it looks like there two different stations, Like when you see a promo saying "Catch Lost Wednesdays at 8:00PM on CTV" You think "this is CFTO, what channel is CTV". I also think that there should no longer be IND stations in Canada

Ouch. Oh, well, eventually every CTV station but Calgary and Edmonton will be a generically-branded station, so I guess it was inevitable, eh?

I wonder how long before CFCN and CFRN go away then. Many people refer to the station as CFCN or Channel 3, not CTV.
Ya think that they'll keep ATV as-is or they'll become CTV shortly? CJOH? CFCF?

I used to think everyone referred to CFRN as just that here in Edmonton... but even as back as four years ago - more people started just calling it "CTV." Hmmmmmm...

Regional needs in a country as vast as Canada vary greatly, but under your logic, the cookie cutter should reign supreme. Try doing that in the United States. You'd raise a lot of furor if you tried to change WPVI to just "ABC". The idea of two different stations is a good thing, because it separates the local from the network. The first priority for any television programming undertaking is to serve the local audience.

In Edmonton, people still call channel 3/cable 2 as "CFRN", and newspapers also refer to them as "CFRN" when they're talking about a show outside of local news. I'm thinking CFRN and CFCN (and maybe ATV) will be the last CTV stations to go generic... a lot of the locally-made promos (not network ones) refer to CFRN or CFCN.

I fired off an e-mail to CFTO complaining about the change, their response was pretty lame and pure PR. It didn't even look like the actually even read my message.

They probably didn't read your message and had an auto message sent back to you. NewsDUDE is right, CFTO has NO CONTROL over their name change, it's the people at CTV's head office.

I have a question about CFTO (I refuse to call it CTV Toronto) and Tomy Gibney. I know I fe years ago he went into "semi-retiremnet". Does anyone know when the last time he filed a report or anchored a newscast was?

I also think that there should no longer be IND stations in Canada Theres something similar happening with ITV in the UK. Before, when the franchises were owned by local companies, they'd have different names like 'Anglia', 'Granada', 'Carlton', 'LWT', 'HTV', 'Central'. Then, Granada started buying more of the franchises. As did Carlton. Since the late 80's, some of the stations began using a generic ITV ident. Then, a new logo was introduced and last year when Carlton and Granada merged, all local names were dropped in favor of the name 'ITV1'. Local news did remain the same, such as 'London Tonight', 'Granada Reports' and so forth. But, all have the exact same set, music and graphics. And, all the idents are the same on all channels. Many people complain about the changes on the UK television forums.

Alright, don't change CFRN either. There isn't anything else around that actually refers to their station as a callsign. (CITV went Global. Then so did CHAN and no more CAT) Another sidenote: Can't find any remnants of anyone who has tapes of CITV news...except for a extremely degraded one at the Space and Science Centre Forensics section (Which I problably guess has been thrown away by this time)
