Today a Liberal MP from London, Ontario left the party and became an independent. I decided to take a look at some of the television coverage of this move.
Naturally, The New PL in London had extensive coverage at the top of the newscast lasting over six minutes since the MP is from the area and has been an MP there since 1993. CKCO-TV in Kitchener had reasonable coverage; they ran a story at 6:04 about O'Brien, and a reporter went to a mall in the London riding O'Brien is MP in to gather reaction. Their report was quite good. CBC also had some coverage during Canada Now. Although I missed the national portion of the newscast, it was the first story mentioned in the summary at the end of the CBLT news, which indicates it got good coverage during the national portion (CBLT airs the national news first).
Global, on the other hand, had absolutely lousy coverage. During the one-hour regional news on CIII, there was absolutely nothing. Leslie Roberts was live from Toronto's Chinatown going on and on about Chinatown and Toronto for most of the hour. I also watched Global National, and finally around 6:50 there was a brief mention of O'Brien's defection with some video, no reporter. Global didn't even mention where the MP was from, other than in Ontario. GN even had news from Toronto that was already shown on CIII earlier, just repackaged with different people interviewed.
Global has once again proven that there's no news outside Toronto. For shame.

Sorry, I guess I'm not getting your point? An MP going independant because he doesn't like his party's views on gay rights...not a huge story the way I see it.

He was trying to show the coverage of a certain event. I think he just picked the event and went to see what each station did to cover it, not the event specifically.
Good report there, BCTVforever.

"Global has once again proven that there's no news outside Toronto. For shame." Sounds suspiciously like an agenda to me!

This was the top story on Global Edmonton's 5:30 PM newscast... so not all Globals think alike.
And I hate to admit - when I first heard the name Pat O'Brien on the radio this morning - the first person to pop in my head was the host of "The Insider." Very sad, but true.

I'm sorry but Global News seems more "fresh" than the other Toronto stations, Plus they are First at 5:30!

Warning: Off topic post coming up
I just liked that picture. From reading some of these posts, makes my head hurt. Sometimes I get up and dance (like Homer) in hopes to try not to think about this site. Did you see the chocolate one I posted? I can't take chocolate anymore, but the picture is funny.
