Well it's 2:30 am and CTV NewsNet is using a crawl with an animated globe logo...does this mean they've finally ditched the big info screen? I'll have to wait and see at 3:00 when the newscast is updated.

I'd say it's better than chock-fulls of information everywhere, you know. Oddly enough, it looks like CBC Newsworld (when it was actually CBC, that is) Yippee, Television Analog to Digital Converter (AKA TV Card) is now back in action and better than ever. (that was a demo of the new higher-quality tuner that I soldered onto the TV card. Seems there's a slightly better difference. )

I don't know, but because of the lack of features, I get the feeling that this is a temporary thing. Therefore, I wouldn't be surprised if, in the near future, there will be a complete relaunch of this station, at least in the graphics department. If there is no plan and this is actually permanent, I'm not very happy with this look.

changes to newsnet have been underway since the crtc relieved CTV this spring of the need to update headlines every 15 minutes. plans were underway to relaunch the station this fall (http://www.the-daily-planet.ca/content.php?id=391) however with the CBC strike (http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_Type1&c=Article&cid=1124401814721&call_pageid=970599109774&col=Columnist969907624636&DPL=IvsNDS%2f7ChAX&tacodalogin=yes), CTV accelerated plans to revise the program flow on newsnet. it would seem the model used tonight (alternating anchors on the hour) may be a model employed throughout the day as staffing is augmented in the month ahead (http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/show/CTVShows/20050822_ctv_release_20050822c). The T-star article hints at CTV raiding talent from CBC (and presumably other networks and CTV local stations) to anchor on newsnet. based on the rapid and recent launch, viewers will witness a work in project. newsnet is a mature channel (8 years on air). some of you may remember the early ctv news 1 years of the rotating desk (which was a complete dive) and endlessly repetitive headlines. if ctv could move to producing a series of 1hr newscasts throughout the day it will be competitive player to newswrld, cnn, headline news, etc,.

This is the press release that newschange was referring to. Copied in full from CTV's website.
-- Provides Better Choice for Intensive News Coverage of Canada and the World ---- CTV National News with Lloyd Robertson Available at 10 p.m. ET-
Clean Look. New Format. Same Commitment. CTV Newsnet Takes First Step in Renewed Aim at Viewers Toronto, Ontario (August 22, 2005) - CTV Newsnet has today taken the first step toward improving its all-news service to Canadians. The channel revealed this morning a new, clean look and announced a revamped late afternoon and prime-time format featuring major increases in its anchor, reporting, and production teams. The goal is to present more immediate, comprehensive and sustained news stories geared toward its Canadian audience.
The new look and style represents the first real landmark transition for the network following the CRTC's April 2005 decision that said CTV Newsnet was no longer required to follow a 15-minute program wheel.
"At CTV News, our commitment is to deliver national and international stories of significance to Canadians," said Robert Hurst, President of CTV News. "We deliver locally and nationally on CTV, and now CTV Newsnet is furthering its dedication to delivering more news, more comprehensively - and we will deliver."
The new on-air style features a full-screen set-up incorporating a news ticker to provide breaking news and recap on-going headlines to viewers. In late afternoon and prime time, multiple production, reportage and anchor teams will work continuously to break, gather and report on the latest news happening in Canada and around the world. The teams are supported by unprecedented resources afforded to the entire CTV News Division. The resources include 15 local newsrooms across Canada, the national newsroom of its sister network, CTV, and nine foreign news bureaus in major centres around the world. In Canada, CTV Newsnet can call upon any one of over 100 news teams roving the country. In all, CTV Newsnet, like any asset in the CTV News Division, has the ability to be first with any breaking story in the country.
As network programmers continue to build out CTV Newsnet's daytime and prime-time schedule, they are quick to remind viewers of its live national broadcast of CTV National News with Lloyd Robertson, which will continue to air daily 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT. For viewers in Ontario and Quebec, it provides a new choice for a credible, national news broadcast in the 10 p.m. timeslot. Meanwhile, veteran journalist and political specialist Mike Duffy will return for a third helping of COUNTDOWN: With Mike Duffy, with controversial guests, behind-the-scenes stories, water cooler discussions and hot topics that can't be found anywhere else. The program will return to the CTV Newsnet schedule later this Fall where it will continue to be the program of record as Canadians gear up for another election campaign.

I like the new look and format. I hated that 15 minute programme wheel. I thought it was silly. It really turned me off watching Newsnet. That programme wheel gave Newsworld an unfair advantage. Now when the strike is over Newsworld will have some Canadian competition which is good I believe.

Yes it was nice to see things actually live and it was nice to see at least an anchor rotation - I watched at 3 pm with Dan Matheson at the desk and then threw it to Jennifer Ward for a preview in the newsroom for the 4 pm (PT) 7 pm (ET) edition. I agree with no1important - it was just so repetitive that I just turned it off. Now CBC Newsworld can't take it all.

Don't remind me of that spinning desk. I remember Air Farce poking fun at it.

Best parody IMO is from This Hour Has 22 Minutes...
Rick Mercer was an anchor on News 1 and the desk went out of control spinning very fast. A computer monitor fell off the desk and he grabbed a sickness bag with the 'CTV n' logo on it.

I was recently at CTV and they said the desk still spins, but they don't use it anymore. What a shame

This channel, in the Vancouver area is on Cable 72. I don't believe it has a high prioirty (from Shaw) to be on, lower down the dial. Sad, but true. Previously it was on Cable 8. Originally on Cable 19. (under control of Rogers)
