<--snip--> Presently, RDTV delivers about half of its content from CanWest Global, and the other half from CBC. RDTV station manager Stan Schmidt says the process to switch over to exclusive Global content began when the station's relationship with CBC began changing.
"This began about two years ago when CBC decided that all their affiliates in the future would have to carry the full CBC program schedule," Schmidt said. "Up until that point, CBC affiliates were able to substitute some programming with a mix of American programming. With that option not being available to us anymore, we began the process of disaffiliating ourselves with CBC and providing a whole new programming schedule to our viewers." <--snip-->

CBC's got way too big a network schedule. They should be like any American network, with blocks of time that local stations can do whatever they want with. Maybe not to the extent that American stations do (they tend to fill that time with syndicrap and court shows), but it would give stations greater flexibility. It would also lessen the hyper drive to get rid of private CBC affiliates, which I believe are the model that the rest of the country should follow.

As an Aussie, I was surprised that there were even privately-owned affilates of what is meant to be a public broadcaster!

As an Aussie, I was surprised that there were even privately-owned affilates of what is meant to be a public broadcaster! These are the privately-owned CBC stations across the country: CFTK Terrace, BC (Standard) CKPG Prince George, BC (Pattison) CJDC Dawson Creek, BC (Standard) CFJC Kamloops, BC (Pattison) CHBC Kelowna, BC (Canwest Global) CHAT Medicine Hat, AB (Pattison) CKX Brandon, MB (CHUM) CHEX Peterborough/Durham, ON (Corus) CKWS Kingston, ON (Corus) SRC also has some affiliates, though I can't list them off the top of my head. Apparently as of January, CHBC Kelowna will become a CH station. Also, a lot of TV stations in the country that have hit the 50th anniversary mark were formerly CBC affiliates.
