Global National today launched Podcast, an audio archive of the award-winning newscast that can be transferred to any MP3 players, including the popular Apple iPod range of digital music players. Each day's file, encoded in 64 kbps 24.000 kHz MPEG-2 Layer 3, is approximately 22:35 in length and 10.5 MB in size. Users can subscribe to the Podcast through Apple iTunes' Podcast directory, or through a link on Global National's website, www.globalnational.com.

It's good enough for voice; any higher data rate would make it impractical for download, and would fill up most flash-based digital music players pretty quickly. In fact, Global can even reduce the file size by nearly half if they encode them in mono instead of stereo.

64kbps is not even near CD quality audio. Try again, Grandpa Global Heh, I have a continuous live feed from my TV-edit computer and I keep it at 23.5kbps heh stop complaining. Video at 23kbps? that's really blurry.

64kbps is all you really need for simple speech. You can upconvert to 128kbps yourselves if you're that much into hearing someone speak clearly.
Any plans for CTV or CBC to do the same?

At least 128 would be good. 64kbps is almost as good as listening on a one speaker tv! ...except the fact that currently TVs don't have compression and would be the equivalent of PCM at 1411kb/s.
