Global National News with Kevin Newman emerged the clear winner in Canada's western provinces in the television newscast battle for viewers.
With an average daily reach of 683,000, Global National News firmly trounced both CTV National News (average daily reach: 595,000) and CBC National (average daily reach: 556,000) in B.C, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
"We are enormously gratified, but not surprised", says Kevin Newman, anchor and executive Editor, Global National News.
"The entire Global National News team has had the number one position locked firmly in its sights since we launched the program just four and a half years ago. We are all thrilled with the success of Global National in such a short period of time.
"With this decisive win in the West, we continue to build on our strategy to grow Global National into the most-watched National newscast in Canada." says Steve Wyatt, Senior Vice President of News and Information. "The next step is the introduction of Global National on Saturday and Sunday on February 26th. Every new viewer is a victory for Global National News and another step in the right direction."

I'm presuming this is a post by Ben. It would be good to cite where you get these things, since it appears this is your work and clearly it is not.
However, one thing that Global National has an advantage over is an earlier time slot. CTV National News and The National on CBC air at 11pm and 10 pm respectively, unlike Global National in the West, where it airs no later than 6:30pm. Just out of curiousity, how is Global National doing out East? My guess is not as well, since it's not being bragged about.

Exactly. There's no way to compare any of the three national news programs because they're all in different time slots.
Here are the figures I got by email today courtesy of people at CTV through BBM InfoSys:
Random nightly sample - 7-11 February 2005
CTV News (LloRobert) = ADR 425,500 @ 2.8
Global National (KevNewman) = ADR 377,800 @ 2.2
CBC The National (PetMansbr) = ADR 315,400 @ 2.0

To me, the above figures seem more realistic than Ben's, if that was his post. I don't think 1.5/9 Western Canadians will be watching the National News. Maybe 1/9 or 0.5/9, like the above numbers suggest.
But of 9 million people in Western Canada, I think it's a stretch to say 1.5 million of them were watching one of the three news programs every day. Plus some viewers watch more than one program, meaning there are overlaps.

Global brags and possibly misconstrue actual facts that they are best in the business. channelcanada.com is a website it appears to be a site for everyone to brag about themselves. Here's an example: A survey says the following: 150,000 people like apple juice 125,000 people like orange juice 95,000 people like grapefruit juice Of course, the survey was conducted by an apple juice company. Obviously, this example and Global's "supposed win" is completely untrue and The Global News facts are WRONG! The BBM ratings are way more reliable. |

According to BBM in Edmonton, over 100,000 people watch GlobalNational, compared to around 47,000 for CTV National news and 46,000 for CBC National. I'm not trashing the post either Ben. The apples/oranges example was to prove that everything you see isn't always reliable. I'd like to know where Global got their stats from. |

The only thing remotely close that I could find is the question I asked - "How is GN doing out East?" Your first post that is just Edmonton alone. Western Canada has other cities besides Edmonton - by the way, when were those ratings taken? I also find it odd that Global "doubles CTV" and that CTV has 1,000 more viewers thab CBC. As mentioned before, if this is true, different time slots have to take into account. Tim's by far is much more accurate than anything else I've seen. |

Those ratings were taken between September 2003 and September 2004. I got them off BBM 2+ numbers. And yes I know there's more to Western Canada than just Edmonton (that city doesn't even compare to Calgary and Vancouver  )... I'm just saying that it might have been true.... BBM has 2+ numbers and 18+ numbers... Global may have beaten CTV if they used the 2+ numbers... Tell me where exactly it's being compared at a national scale. How popular is Global National on CIHF (Global Maritimes)? They have a weird setup of running 15 minutes of their local news at 11, GN from 11:15 to 11:45, then another 15 minutes of local news to midnight. They do not run GN during prime time, only at 11:15 PM. At least the schedule says that...but then the Canwest website says:
"Global's national newscast is wrapped on either end with our local cast. Different yes-but we think it works well."

Well (and this is coming from a Global fan) that Global National dose not do that well over there. But really Global National must be #1 in the west, Global wont lie, Plus is Global's facts were wrong then CTV would have said something about it.
